Foam Fabrication

I should be blogging about the amazing time I had at DragonCon or even all I learned at GooCon but I’m swamped at work and it will be another week or so before all these new students are settled in .

But I couldn’t ignore this video; it is the best straight forward foam tutorial I’ve seen.

It is from Will Morgan of WM Armory

Hat Tutorial (not mine)

leave a comment »

Dreamstress just did a great blog on refurbishing a modern straw hat into something costume worthy.

A bergére, a new word for a hat I know you’ve seen, but maybe only in paintings.

bergere

She did an excellent tutorial with clear instructions and photos that actually help explain the process.  And no wasted steps.

If straw hats cost more, I think it might take more boldness to cut into them and maybe more handholding in the instructions, but seriously, what harm can you do? It is a cheap straw hat.

Go for it!

I love sewing!

Our First Dealer’s Table

Jamie and Meg at the Dealer's Table

Jamie and Meg at the Rhymes With Stitch dealer’s table. It must have been early in the weekend since there are still lots of hats on the table.

And yes, in front of Meg, that is a gen-u-wine Hoss Cartwright hat; one of the few full-size hats that came home with us. Anyone need a last minute cowboy costume?
I love sewing.

Painted Lady

Pictured is Meg’s latest embellishment project – this corset was to be ‘made steampunk’  for the lovely Julie from Stonehill. Meg used fabric paint, ribbon and a tassel to create a new look from a plain black corset.  Modeled by Jamie

Dwarfs

leave a comment »

I work in a fun place. These are my co-workers at what amounts to a pep rally this morning.  We were Snow White and the ridiculous number of dwarfs . I made the hats/beards last Sunday afternoon. We, of course, won the competition.

Ah, the silly things we do for free pizza.  And yes, Snow White and the Witch are both young men in drag.

Not really couture, but we had fun. The hats will be donated to a children’s program

I love sewing, even fake fur

Website vs Blog

leave a comment »

Someone recently asked me about the website and why it was blank. It took me a minute to figure out the problem. The website is really full of stuff but none of it is public. We use the website to send pictures back and forth to each other and to clients.
This is the kind of thing I might post behind the scenes.

Which height of pillbox did the client want? She can see the sizes to get an idea and share the link with friends to take a poll. Since most of the pictures are samples, they aren’t posted where anyone and everyone can see them.

Which one do you think is most complementary? (row one is 2 in, row two is 1 1/2 in, row three is 3 in)

I do plan to rectify the public view and soon.

I love sewing! (photoshop, not so much)

Costume Cobbler?

This last weekend I attended Southern Media Con, a fan run geekapalooza. (aka  The Con formally known as VidCon) There are Vids, Panels (planned and unplanned) and of course, food.   I always have a fun time, but this year there was a bonus.

We were at the lovely Hilton Bayfront in St Pete. Sharing the hotel was the 107th annual Shoe Service Institute of America Convention. These are the kind of folks you find in those tiny shops at the mall that will fix your favorite heels while you wait. This would have been easily ignored if I hadn’t got a peek into the SSIA version of a dealer’s room while they were setting up.  “Oh my, those are some big sewing machines you have there”

The amazing Deb Hicks listened to my complicated plot to sneak in for all of two minutes, without even making fun of me, she walks up the organizers of the event and asked if I could look around.  They graciously let me, on the promise I would not pick up swag.  Understandable, I’m talking major swag being offered by the wholesalers and suppliers. No problem, I just wanted to look around. Whee!

There were tons of bits and pieces of shoe repair stuff, leather, glues, dyes, paints and big ass pieces of machinery. There was even Birkenstock repair supplies, the only shoes I ever had repaired before I started costuming.

I did get some catalogs and pamphlets. I want it all. I’m lusting after a ‘Post Sewing Machine’  and I found a place that sells quality leather paint in tons of colors, packaged in 1 oz to 5 gallon containers. Angelus Shoe Polish Company  Same place has what looks like a marker that you can fill with the paint, sort of a refillable sharpie. So Amazing. They even had some pictures of custom sneakers that artists have done.  Want. Want. Want. (the toys, not the shoes)

Being with Fans and spotting a new obsession – it will get the creative juices flowing

Now, do I want to fly to Portland to learn Cobblery or Charleston to learn millinery for my next vacation? Decisions, decisions.

I love sewing
